Most residential robberies are opportunistic crimes; the burglar explores a neighbourhood assessing the risk and reward of each home, picking those that offer the best opportunity. For these thieves, the risk they want to reduce is the risk of detection, while the reward is your valuables.
Your job as a homeowner is to ensure that your home represents a poor opportunity for the would-be burglar by increasing the perceived risk of detection while reducing the reward they will receive. Thieves pick the homes that are least secure – your objective is to ensure that it’s not yours.
Let’s take a look at four easy ways you can achieve that:
Appearances are everything. Make your home look more secure by installing security screens on the windows and a security front door. Keeping your garden and home well-maintained shows potential thieves that you care for your home and property. You want any unwelcome visitors to know that your home is going to be a tough one to crack.
You should also avoid displaying possessions that may tempt thieves into having a go at your property. Store your car in your garage and cut up and dispose of boxes for expensive goods; don’t leave the boxes for your brand new $2000 TV sitting on the pavement as a signpost for thieves. If possible, avoid leaving valuable possessions where they can be seen through windows and doors.
A burglar’s first priority is to avoid protection. Privacy fences and hedges don’t just give you and your family privacy; they also give thieves the shelter they need to break in without neighbours seeing. Ensuring clear lines of site to your home from the road and installing motion-sensor lights at the front and back will make burglars uncomfortable approaching your home.
A strong community is a strong protection against thieves. Get to know your neighbours and encourage them to keep an eye on your property and do the same for them. Let them know when you’re going on holiday so that they can report any suspicious activities during that time. Visible neighbourhood watch signs may also help deter criminals.
Installing security doors
and security window screens will both deter thieves and make it harder to break-in should they try. While no door or window is completely impregnable, security screens mean the force, time and noise necessary to get through makes it highly likely the thief will be detected long before they achieve entry, so they will almost certainly choose an easier opportunity.
While ground-floor entry points are preferred, some homes have balconies that are accessible with a small amount of climbing – make sure these are secure too.
